WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama is promoting his health care overhaul’s benefits for small businesses as he tries to rally public support behind the new law scorned by Republicans and protesters.

A speech Thursday in Portland, Maine, is the second in a series of planned appearances to plug the sweeping changes coming to health care. Obama was to focus the event on the short- and long-term benefits for small companies, which have suffered during the economic downturn.

After speaking in Maine, Obama planned to travel to Boston to attend two fundraisers for the Democratic National Committee. His trip comes as much of the Northeast is suffering through devastating flooding caused by record-setting rainfall.

One of Rhode Island‘s Democratic congressmen, Rep. Jim Langevin, sent a letter to the White House Thursday requesting that Obama view the damage to that state during his travels Thursday. Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano plans to travel to Rhode Island on Friday.

The president remains on a campaign to sell his newly passed health plan to America, emphasizing different aspects as he goes.

Under the plan, businesses that have 25 or fewer employees with average annual wages of less than $50,000 will receive tax credits this year if they provide health care coverage to their workers. Those credits are expected to increase by 2014, with 4 million small businesses benefiting, according to the White House.

Businesses that may be eligible for the tax credits will receive letters from the government in the coming weeks, another step in the administration’s efforts to tout the benefits of the health care overhaul.

Also starting in 2014, companies with up to 100 employees will be able to buy insurance through new state-based purchasing pools, or exchanges, with the goal of giving small businesses the same kind of purchasing power as larger companies. Twenty-two million self-employed Americans will also be able to purchase insurance through the exchanges….

Congressional Republicans were united against the law and many predict that Democrats who voted for it will be dragged down in the November elections. Some Republicans are calling for repeal. Obama and Democratic candidates are trying to sell voters on the plan’s benefits for them, and to move past the messy, partisan process and angry protests that marked its passage.

Obama’s trip to Portland takes him to the home state of two moderate Republican senators — Susan Collins and Olympia Snowe — whose votes for the legislation the president ardently sought. In the end, he could not win them over. Neither senator planned to be at the event.

Maine’s two U.S. House members — Democrats Chellie Pingree and Mike Michaud — voted for the bill and were appearing with the president.

Overall, the 10-year, nearly $1 trillion plan Obama signed into law last week will extend coverage to 32 million people who are currently uninsured and will shape how almost every American receives and pays for medical treatment.

The law doesn’t require businesses to offer insurance, but hits employers with 50 or more workers with an annual fee if the companies don’t insure them and the government ends up subsidizing workers’ coverage. Those fines have troubled critics of the overhaul, who argue that the increased costs could bankrupt companies trying to recover from the recession.

The state of Maine has been a leader on health care reform, establishing programs to lower prescription drug costs and extend health insurance to the working poor.

JDRF is partnering with Johnson & Johnson’s Animas Corporation, to develop the first artificial pancreas. 

We found a mother in Sugar Land, who has been volunteering and raising money for JDRF, to go specifically toward funding the new device. Lisa Brettman’s 16-year old son, Trevor, has been dealing with Type 1 Diabetes most of his life…..

“This is life changing for us… for those of us who live with Type 1 diabetes. We live in fear all the time,” says Lisa. 

Living with Type-1 diabetes is definitely demanding.

“From playing the trumpet, to playing video games, and even sleeping – pretty much everything I do… it has changed every single thing,” says Trevor. 

The artificial pancreas will be software that stays on the outside of the body, along with an insulin pump and a continuous glucose monitor (which measures blood sugar levels).

“This new project will allow the two to talk to each other, so that the continuous glucose monitor can say to the pump – hey, the kiddo’s blood sugar is too high so it’s time to give him insulin now, and the pump will give him insulin. Or if it’s too low, it can stop administering insulin,” says Molly Naylor, who is the the Executive Director of the Houston Chapter of J.D.R.F. 

She goes on to say, this is a huge development!

“It means kids won’t end up in hospitals with comas or seizures, it means parents don’t have to get up 5-6 times a night to check blood sugars, because they’re afraid these kids won’t wake up the next morning.” 

“It’ll be really, really, really helpful, I can’t even describe it. It will make the future that much brighter, and I could live every single day that much easier,” says Trevor. “It will help get rid of the fear, some of the fear, we live with on a daily basis”, says Trevor’s mom.

TORONTO — Pop a vitamin, ban doctors’ neckties, vacuum away swine flu germs and smoke an e-cigarette to ward off H1N1.

Those are just some of the suggestions making the rounds on the Internet that have health officials and experts shaking their heads.

The Web is awash with dubious advice and various flu kits for sale as H1N1 deaths continue to rise, vaccine shortages force clinics to close and officials find themselves unable to provide a hard date for when the general public can get their flu shot….

The message from experts to those tempted to buy into such schemes – don’t.

Dr. Donald Low, chief microbiologist at Toronto’s Mount Sinai hospital, chuckles when he hears about some of the alternative remedies, including one that suggests putting onions around the house, like a farmer did with the Spanish flu in 1918, to absorb the virus.

“Well in 1918, what could you do? You had little else. Unfortunately that doesn’t make any biological sense and there’s been no scientific evidence that such a thing would actually work,” said Low.

“It sounds kind of cute and might be a little obnoxious to have to have peeled onions around the house.”

Still, questionable cures are so commonplace that Health Canada and the Competition Bureau were compelled last Wednesday to issue a warning advising people not to purchase products claiming to fight or prevent swine flu.

Health Canada said it was monitoring the Internet and would take action against Canadian websites selling unauthorized products.

The federal agency has only authorized three products – the H1N1 vaccine Arepanrix and the antiviral drugs Tamiflu (oseltamivir) and Relenza (zanamivir). As well, the distribution of 200,000 doses of unadjuvanted H1N1 vaccine Panvax from Australia has been authorized for use in pregnant women.

“We’re advising Canadians not to purchase unauthorized products that claim to fight or prevent H1N1 over the Internet or other sources,” said Brent Homan of Competition Bureau.

The bureau investigates health fraud and will send letters or take other steps to fight it, he added.

U.S. federal officials recently sent warning letters to promoters of more than 140 swine flu-related products, telling them to stop making false claims. It has also posted a list online that consumers can check.

There’s an amazing array of products outlined – everything from gels, inhalers and body washes to herbal extracts and tea products to air purifiers, ultraviolet devices, gloves and sprays.

Some even have the phrase “swine flu” in their name, such as the “Swine Flu… Gone” shampoo.

There’s the “Basic Pandemic Swine Flu Kit” by Quake Kare Inc. that comes with a N95 mask, four antimicrobial wipes, a pair of industrial grade gloves and antiseptic hand sanitizer gel – all packaged in a Zip-lock Bag – on sale for US$10.95, down from the regular price of US$15.95.

Or you can upgrade to the deluxe kit which adds safety goggles, hooded coveralls, plastic sheeting and duct tape for $39.95.

Despite the company website’s claim to the contrary, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration said the kit is not approved to fight H1N1.

“There’s always going to be opportunists,” said Low, who worries Canadians might opt for unapproved products, seeing them as another excuse not to get a flu shot.

“It’s giving false hope where people are going to get the feeling that they can protect themselves and their family and that they don’t need a vaccine,” he said.

For the record, Low – who is also head of the public health laboratories with the Ontario Agency for Health Protection and Promotion – has had the flu shot himself, as he is in a high-risk group, and he said he had no adverse effects.

He recommends checking out reliable websites of the Public Health Agency of Canada, the Ontario Ministry of Health, the U.S. Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, the World Health Organization and CIDRAP for flu advice.

What about air purifiers or masks touted on the web to fight H1N1? There’s no evidence air purifiers reduce H1N1 transmission, Low said.

N95 masks flew off the shelves during the 2003 SARS crisis and Low said they were proven to protect against airborne transmission of viruses. If infected patients wear surgical masks, which are less effective, he said they wouldn’t be able to cough onto susceptible people or surfaces.

But Low said he hasn’t seen any reports that airborne transmission is a major route for H1N1, so he thinks masks are of little benefit in general against the swine flu.

Zinc works for upper respiratory tract infections and Vitamin D helps treat tuberculosis, but neither fights swine flu, said Low. As for Vitamin C to fight H1N1? Forget about it, he said.

Don’t sweat it over your doctor’s germy necktie either, because swine flu won’t jump from the tie onto patients, he said.

A claim on a press release this week states that “E cigarettes may be more effective than swine flu vaccine” because one of their ingredients, propylene glycol, may be a powerful deterrent against influenza. It cites a 1942 study to back it up. But Low just shakes his head.

“What people will stoop to. There’s good evidence that smoking is a risk factor for people to get influenza,” Low said.

What does work? The Public Health Agency of Canada advises you to wash hands thoroughly with soap and warm water, or use hand sanitizer, cough and sneeze into your arm or sleeve, stay home when sick and get the flu shot.

The results of a study performed by the National Institute of Cancerologia in Mexico City may raise new hopes for patients diagnosed with the asbestos-related illness, mesothelioma.

The study, which followed 30 patients with pleural mesothelioma from September 2007 until April 2009, aimed to determine whether the use of liposomal doxorubicin and cisplatin, two chemotherapy medications, would improve the survival rates of the patients.

Cisplatin is a drug  approved by the Federal Drug Administration in 1976 and is often used in combination with the drug Alimta in the treatment of mesothelioma…..

Researchers of the Mexican-based institute hope the liposomal form of doxorubicin, combined with cisplatin, will allow patients to remain stable for a longer period of time.  The chemical makeup of liposomes is similar to a human’s cell membrane, which allows the drug to be delivered in a more potent way than other methods.  Typically, a single drug chemotherapy treatment has had a 20 percent success rate for mesothelioma patients, while the combination therapies have produced a slightly higher response of 25 percent.

According to Dr. H. Ian Robins, a University of Wisconsin Professor and oncologist who specializes in cancers relating to asbestos, combination therapies such as the combination tested in the National Institute of Cancerologia’s study, may hold the key to higher survival rates for mesothelioma patients.

Typically developed through exposure to asbestos, mesothelioma is a rare cancer that accounts for three percent of all cancer diagnoses in the United States. Due to an the long latency period associated with mesothelioma, many patients will not experience related symptoms until 20 to 50 years after exposure, when the disease has already progressed to later stages.

There are a number of factors that can impact a patients’ mesothelioma survival rateincluding the  age of a patient at the time of diagnosis and the stage of the cancer’s progression. Currently, there is no cure for mesothelioma, although treatment such as chemotherapy can help a patient combat the cancer.

Although the release date of the study testing cisplatin and liposomal doxorubicin has yet to be determined, many patients and families are hopeful that the results will offer a brighter future for those who have been diagnosed with mesothelioma.
