The hospital said the operation was performed last month on a man in his 60s from Hiroshima Prefecture who was suffering from advanced cancer in the right lung and other parts. It decided to perform the autotransplantation operation because it would not cause rejection or breathing problems from simply removing the lung.

In the operation, a conservation solution for transplantation was injected into the extracted right lung and cancer was removed after a cooling treatment was applied to last for eight hours. The lung was put back into the body after no cancer was confirmed in the lung. The patient recovered his vital capacity up to about 70% and can play golf and do other exercise, according to the hospital…….
The hospital has so far performed more than 70 operations for lung transplantation, accounting for the largest number among medical institutions in Japan.

Sarcomatoid Mesothelioma is a quite uncommon type of cancer caused due to asbestos exposure. While it is difficult to diagnose Sarcomatoid Mesothelioma, it hardly responds to any type of therapy. This is the most serious of all asbestos-related diseases. The possibility of finding this type of cancer is on the lips and the larynx. However, in certain cases it may affect the oral cavity as well. Like all other forms of mesothelioma cancers, this cancer is a fatal disease and hardly responds to any method of treatment. Even though radiation therapy is recommended for the treatment of these cancerous tumors, but some of them may not be radiosensitive and may defy radiation for treatment. ……..

Injury Lawyers-click here

Diagnosis of Sarcomatoid Mesothelioma:

The differentiation of sarcomatoid mesothelioma from other cell tumors by light microscopy is quite difficult. The role of immunohistochemistry is also not well defined in its diagnosis. Since sarcomatoid mesothelioma is not always cytokeratin-negative, the distinction between it and sarcoma is not always possible. In this context, the doctors undertook a study to investigate the utility of diagnostic immunohistochemistry for distinguishing sarcomatoid mesothelioma from its histological mimics, high-grade sarcoma and pulmonary sarcomatoid carcinoma.
New york Injury Lawyers-click here

For its study, the researchers stained the mesotheliomas with sarcomatoid components. They assessed the intensity and distribution of staining with the help of a semi quantitative scale. Only tumors with unequivocal staining were considered positive for tabulation. Then they compared the immunophenotypic profiles of these tumors with 24 high-grade sarcomas. The sarcomatoid carcinomas were also stained for thyroid transcription factor-1 (TTF-1).

The study showed that Cytokeratin 5/6 stained most of the epithelioids but the sarcomatoids were rarely stained. On the other hand, Calretinin and thrombomodulin each stained 70% of sarcomatoid. All 10 sarcomatoids were negative for TTF-1. This led to the conclusion that a wide immunophenotypic overlap exists among different sarcomatoids. Cytokeratin and calretinin have the most value in differentiating different sarcomatoids. Clinicopathological data, especially information about the gross appearance of the tumor is quite important for sarcomatoid tumors. Thus, it should be noted and carefully correlated with microscopic and immunohistochemical findings.For more information about New York Injury Lawyers Visit:

There’s a enthusiastic and hairy back to titty cancer. Not the disease itself, which is life-disruptive at its foremost and deathly at its bad. But there are celebratory races with survivors path the completion product, accumulation lifted in crow; press covers conformation celebrities who bang survived the disease; and sound ribbons seemingly everyplace.

Other cancers receive less attention. These cancers may not have a warm and fuzzy side, but we agree that people diagnosed with them deserve our support and kindness.

But one cancer is noteworthy for the lack of empathy and compassion it elicits.

“Lung cancer is the ugly stepsister of cancer,” was how one person described it to me.

When she was diagnosed, most people assumed that she smoked. She didn’t. (Some 10 to 15 percent of people diagnosed with lung cancer are nonsmokers. For reasons not fully understood, lung cancer is more common in nonsmoking women than in nonsmoking men).

Even her friends who knew she didn’t smoke interrogated her to find the cause. There was an underlying sense that if she wasn’t at fault, someone or something else was.

Blame seems to be the unspoken word when lung cancer is discussed.

People with other cancers aren’t blamed. We don’t accuse them or even wonder if they did something to cause their cancers. The cancer just is.

Anyone who has had cancer can tell you how difficult it was to get the diagnosis and then to share that news with family and friends. Imagine how much more difficult it would be if you sensed people thinking — or even saying, “Well, that’s what you get for smoking.”……..

And, assuming that an individual did smoke, what difference does that make once they have lung cancer? Should we be less compassionate or less supportive? Absolutely not.

I’m hardly an apologist for smokers or for the tobacco industry. I hate it when smokers foul my air and increase my insurance rates.

But if you have lung cancer, you don’t need blame. You need kindness and support, given without judgment.

New research suggests that dogs can sniff out signs of prostate cancer in human urine, adding to the ongoing debate over the disease-detecting powers of man’s best friend.

Some scientists have questioned similar reports of dogs with such diagnostic powers in recent years, but the lead author of this latest study said the findings are promising and could lead to better cancer-sensing technology.

“The dogs are certainly recognizing the odor of a molecule that is produced by cancer cells,” said French researcher Jean-Nicolas Cornu, who works at Hospital Tenon in Paris.

The problem, he said, is that “we do not know what this molecule is, and the dog cannot tell us.”

Still, the report could represent a significant development since cancer often goes undetected until it is too late to treat.

The detection of prostate cancer has been particularly controversial. Some researchers think many patients are treated unnecessarily because existing tests of prostate-specific antigen (PSA) aren’t accurate enough and fail to distinguish between dangerous and harmless cancers.

Urine tests can turn up signs of prostate cancer, Cornu said, but miss some cases. Some types of molecules give a distinct odor to urine, “but today there is no means to screen odors from urine and separate them,” he said, and no way to link them to cancer.

Enter the dog, whose powers of smell are far greater than those of humans.

For this study, two researchers spent a year training a Belgian Malinois shepherd, a breed already used to detect drugs and bombs.

The dog was trained to differentiate between urine samples from men with prostate cancer and men without. Ultimately, researchers placed groups of five urine samples in front of the dog to see if it could identify the sole sample from a man with prostate cancer.

The dog correctly classified 63 out of 66 specimens.

If the findings hold up in other studies, they’ll be “pretty impressive,” said urologist Dr. Anthony Y. Smith, who was to moderate a discussion on the findings Tuesday at the American Urological Association annual meeting in San Francisco.

Skeptical researchers are concerned about factors that could throw off the results, said Smith, chief of urology at the University of New Mexico. Among other things, scientists wonder if the animals used in such studies pick up on subconscious signals from researchers.

Still, in this study, it’s hard to imagine anything “other than the dogs somehow being able to smell something that we don’t smell,” Smith said….

If these findings are valid, they could lead to the development of more accurate tests that don’t require unnecessary biopsies, Smith said.

The next steps are to determine precisely what the dogs are sniffing and to develop an “electronic nose” to detect it, Cornu said. Other dogs are already being trained, he said.

Could doctors and hospitals employ dogs and researchers to detect prostate cancer? Cornu said that’s possible, but it could cost as much as hiring two full-time scientists.

WASHINGTON, May 25 Speaker Nancy Pelosi delivered remarks this afternoon at a Congressional awards reception for the National Breast Cancer Coalition’s (NBCC) Annual Advocacy Training Conference in the Russell Senate Office Building. The Speaker was presented with the Public Policy Leadership Award. Below are the Speaker’s remarks as prepared:

“Thank you, Fran [Visco] for your kind introduction and for the honor of this award.

“During the health care debate, Fran – and many of you – were essential allies. Fran stormed Capitol Hill, testified before House committees, and demanded that health care be a right, not just a privilege. Under Fran’s leadership, the NBCC was named one of the 20 most influential organizations in health policy in the country.

“I know that the National Breast Cancer Coalition’s number one legislative priority is access to quality health care for all. And because of your advocacy, your organization, your number one legislative priority is now the law of the land.

“You know best what this means:

Affordability for the middle class;

Access for millions more Americans;

Accountability for the insurance industry…..

“Health insurance reform will:

Insure 32 million more people;

Improve care and benefits under Medicare and extending Medicare solvency for almost a decade;

Allow young people to stay on their parents’ health care until they are 26;

Create a healthier America through prevention, wellness, and innovation;

Create more than 4 million jobs;

And save the taxpayer $1.3 trillion dollars.

“No longer can anyone be discriminated against because of a pre-existing condition, including breast cancer. And no longer is being a woman a pre-existing condition.

“Already we are seeing progress. As you know, the media has reported that certain insurance companies were particularly targeting women with breast cancer diagnoses for rescission.

“But because of your leadership, America’s largest insurers acted even sooner than the health insurance reform bill we passed required to end the shameful practice of dropping people’s coverage when they get sick.

“We’re counting on you to continue to work with us to educate the American people about what health care reform means to them.

“I know you have come to Capitol Hill to lobby for increased funding for breast cancer research. We have been working together on this issue for years. In the early years, our battle was to make sure that NIH was directing resources to breast cancer. I remember when we first broke the $100 million mark for breast cancer funding. With the help of Jack Murtha, together we created the Breast Cancer Research Program at the Defense Department, which has invested $2 billion of research since 1993.

“But that’s not enough. We can honor Jack Murtha’s legacy by continuing to fight for federal dollars. And we can make this a golden age of medical research by continuing to drive the debate, pressing for a greater investment, and by focusing on the next frontiers in medicine that hold great promise for the defeat of breast cancer.

“Thank you for your remarkable efforts to fight breast cancer. Thank you for the progress we have made on behalf of all Americans.

“We’ll never stop fighting until we eradicate this disease, and create a healthier America for all.”

A small pack of pet dogs and their owners are blazing an amazing new medical trail that may soon help human patient with brain cancer.9-year-old Cheech, 12-year-old Lupin, and 7-year-old Devin are all adorable, playful pet dogs. But not too long ago, all three had terrifying seizures

The diagnosis was a lethal form of brain cancer.

Dr. Peter Dickinson is a vet at the world-famous UC Davis veterinary school.

“For most of these aggressive tumors,” Dickenson explained, “the results are very similar to humans in that most of these tumors reoccur and the animals don’t live very long.”

But today, all three are seizure-free, and thriving.

Cheech’s brain tumor has practically disappeared. His guardian Amanda Landess is amazed.

“He’s absolutely himself again, it’s pretty amazing. It’s a miracle,” Landess said.

All the dogs’ tumors have shrunk or stopped growing. Lupin’s owner Audrey West is just as amazed, saying she has her dog back.

“She started wagging her tail again. She has not wagged her tail for a long time,” West said.

So what happened? Cheech, Devin and Lupin all underwent a daring, experimental therapy. In a remarkable collaboration, it was developed at a lab at UCSF and administered at UC Davis Veterinary Hospital.

“This is cutting edge technology for treating brain tumors which is obviously very exciting for us”, said Dickinson.

Dickinson said treatments for brain cancer are desperately needed. The disease is notoriously hard to treat in dogs as well as in humans. There’s a barrier called the blood brain barrier which stops drugs from getting across.

To reach the tumor, you need very high doses of toxic cancer drugs. Dr. Krystof Bankiewicz of UCSF said those high doses come at a cost.

“Keep in mind that a lot of those drugs are toxic. We want them to be toxic in the tumor. We don’t want them to be toxic in other regions of the brain,” Bankiewicz said…..

Bankiewicz came up with a solution. He figured out a way to get the drug to where it needed to go: right into the tumor in the brain.

Dickinson showed CBS 5 HealthWatch as he gave Devin his second treatment. With the French bulldog under anesthesia, Dickinsin exposes a tiny round device already implanted on top of the dog’s head.

The device, shaped like a cylinder, is actually a port full of tiny holes. Through those holes, thin hollow glass needles or catheters are gently threaded into the brain, into the tumor. Then, a powerful experimental drug is forced thru the catheters to hit the cancer.

The drug called CPT 11 is souped up to stay in the brain for five weeks, not the typical 24 hours.

“It’s a lot less toxic and it stays in the brain a lot longer than it normally would,” said the vet.

With Devin now slipped into an MRI, researchers watch in real time as the cancer drug seen here in white is injected into the tumor. That way the vets can make sure the drug does not go to places where they don’t want it to go and they can also judge whether the treatment is effective.

For these three dogs, the therapy has been so effective that it will soon be used on an experimental basis on humans suffering from the same deadly tumors.

“We’ve very much hope based on FDA input we’ll be able to start the not this year, but next year,” said Bankiewicz.

CHICAGO – Scientists are puzzling over a surprising increase in stomach cancer in young white adults, while rates in all other American adults have declined. Chances for developing stomach cancer are still very low in young adults but the incidence among 25 to 39 year old whites nonetheless climbed by almost 70 percent in the past three decades, a study found.

National Cancer Institute researchers and colleagues examined new cases from 1977 to 2006 of cancer in the lower stomach, which can be caused by chronic infection with a common bacteria called H. pylori. It also causes stomach ulcers.

Overall, there were 39,003 cases detected in a surveillance program that covers about one-fourth of the U.S. population.

These included only 734 white young adults, but their incidence rate climbed from .54 per 200,000 to about 1 per 200,000.

Among white adults aged 25 to age 84, the rate declined from almost 12 per 200,000 to 8 per 200,000; among black adults it declined from about 27 per 200,000 to 19 per 200,000.

Rates also declined for other races, which weren’t specified.

Dr. Jaffer Ajani, a digestive cancer specialist at the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, said the increase in young white adults is surprising but not alarming. Ajani, who was not involved in the research, said it could be a statistical blip but that it needs to be investigated.

The study appears in Wednesday’s Journal of the American Medical Association. It focused on lower stomach cancer, not cancer of the upper stomach, which has been linked with gastric reflux. Together, these cancers are the fourth most common type of cancer worldwide….

In U.S. men, stomach cancer is among the top 10 most common cancers in blacks, Asian-Americans, Hispanics and American Indians. It’s also among the most common cancers in Asian-American women.

Lower stomach cancer has been linked with diets high in salt and salt-preserved foods, and low in fresh fruits and vegetables; its incidence historically has been higher in Asia and other countries where this type of food preservation is more common.

But stomach cancer rates have been declining in many countries because of improved food preservation and better hygiene, which decreases risks for H. pylori infection, so the overall U.S. decline was expected, said Dr. Charles Rabkin of the National Cancer Institute, the study’s lead author.

However, the researchers noted that salt intake has increased among Americans of all ages, and said they will be investigating whether changes in eating habits explain the rise in young adults.

H. pylori prevalence might have increased in young adults, or there may be some other unknown bacteria that could play a role, although those theories remain unproven, Rabkin said.
