A patient with mesothelioma often demonstrates symptoms 15 to 50 years after initial exposure to asbestos. Since mesothelioma symptoms can resemble other conditions, initial symptoms demonstrated by pleural mesothelioma patients may be mistaken for influenza and pneumonia. Similarly, symptoms of pericardial mesothelioma are similar to symptoms of other cardiac conditions.
