NILES — Hundreds gathered at a Niles bowling alley Saturday to strike back at cancer. The popular “Bowl for the Cure” event raised money for the continuing fight against breast cancer.

“Anything to save someone else you do,” said Cheryl Culp, a breast cancer survivor and “Bowl for The Cure” supporter. “It’s hard to explain, but when you go through the experience yourself, it’s good to see this many people.”

Culp said breast cancer affects not only the victim, but everyone around them. For supporter Shaun Harner, that fact couldn’t be more true. His grandmother was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2002. She died two years later….

“It kind of hits home and I’d like to help,” Harner said. “If somebody can find out something, just a smidgen of an idea of how to cure this deadly disease, it’s worth it.”

This is the fourth annual Bowl for the Cure, and according to event coordinator Chris Merlin, each year has brought more support.

“I’m thrilled our little community of Niles comes together and does this every year,” Merlin said.

The goal this year is to raise $10,000.

All of the money raised goes to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. Three-fourths of the money will go to help people in the area, the other quarter goes to the foundation headquarters.

Bowl For the Cure events are held across the nation. Last year, the Niles event raised $11,000, ranking 8th in the country.
