Nebl identifies risk factors for heart disease

Sunday, February 28th, 2010

Talking about women and heart disease at the Woodland Park Senior Center, Sandy Nebl was both light-hearted and deadly serious.

“Heart disease is the Number One killer of women,” said Nebl, chief clinical officer at Pikes Peak Regional Hospital. “Nothing even comes close to heart disease. One in 24 women will die of heart disease.”

Heart disease is a plumbing problem on a highway of vains and arteries, she said, adding, “When any place on that highway starts to get plugged up, we’ve got a problem. We have coronary arteries on the heart and if they plug up, you have a heart attack.”

As well, problems occur if the valves in the heart slow down or aren’t working right. “They need to be replaced; congestive heart failure means the heart has stretched out and is not working efficiently,” Nebl said.

Heart failure, for instance, can be preceded by swelling in the ankles, out-of-the-ordinary fatigue, dizziness, heart flutters and nausea. “For the most part there are treatments for that; many times medicines will help quite a bit, actually,” Nebl said.

However, there are other factors that affect heart disease, among them, fat, bad diet, genetics, age, gender, family history, blood pressure, smoking, cholesterol, exercise and weight.

“This is a conversation you should be having with your physician or physician’s assistant,” she said.

Having delivered the cautionary news, Nebl offered up a counterpoint. “The good news is that there are things you can do to prevent and/or control heart disease,” she said. “I’ve been in health care for 30 years and I’m here to tell you there is no condition that gets better if you ignore it.”

Nebl concluded with a zinger, an antidote to premature death from heart disease. “Enjoy people. The people we did heart surgery on, I can almost predict the ones who were going to do well,” she said. “A lot of it was their attitude. It made a huge difference with their recovery. Surround yourself with positive people who support what you’re trying to do.”… (more…)

Removing healthy breast affects cancer odds

Saturday, February 27th, 2010

A growing number of women with cancer in one breast choose to have their other, healthy breast removed in hopes it will prevent a second cancer. But new research finds that elective surgery improved survival in only a small group of women — those who are under 50 and are in the early stages of a type of breast cancer known as estrogen receptor-negative cancer…. Severe Psoriasis Increases Heart Disease Risk

Thursday, February 25th, 2010

Watch out for signs of cardiovascular disease if you have severe psoriasis. Penn Medicine researchers warned that people with severe psoriasis were nearly 60 percent more likely to die from heart-related causes and stroke than those without psoriasis. The risk of cardiovascular disease was highest in younger people, suggesting that cardiovascular disease may speed up in younger people with severe psoriasis, according to the study, published in the European Heart Journal. If you have severe psoriasis, talk to your doctor and get other heart disease risk factors – high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and excess weight – under control.

Removing Lymph Nodes May Boost Endometrial Cancer Survival

Thursday, February 25th, 2010

THURSDAY, Feb. 25 (HealthDay News) — Endometrial cancer patients at medium to high risk for cancer recurrence are more likely to survive if both the pelvic lymph nodes and para-aortic lymph nodes are removed, rather than just the pelvic lymph nodes, say Japanese researchers.

The para-aortic lymph nodes, which are located in front of the lumbar vertebral bodies near the aorta, receive drainage from the lower gastrointestinal tract and the pelvic organs, according to a news release about the study.

The study included 671 women with endometrial cancer who had pelvic lymph nodes removed or both pelvic and para-aortic lymph nodes removed. Women at medium or high risk for cancer recurrence were offered additional treatment in the form of chemotherapy or radiotherapy…. (more…)

Researchers to test Radio-embolisation technique in patients with bowel cancer

Thursday, February 25th, 2010

Clinical trial launched to test new treatment technique for bowel cancer

Cancer Research UK this week launches a new trial for patients with bowel cancer that has spread to the liver to see whether a newradiotherapy treatment technique is more effective than standard chemotherapy.

Researchers at trial centres across the UK and coordinated at Oxford University will test a new treatment called Radio-embolisation, a form of internal radiotherapy that uses the tumour’s blood supply to target multiple sites of disease within the liver. They will combine this new treatment with standard chemotherapy in patients recently diagnosed with bowel cancerthat has spread to the liver.

The first patient will start the treatment this week at the Royal Surrey County Hospital in Guildford.

Despite major advances in treating advanced bowel cancer, the number of patients who survive beyond five years remains disappointingly low – less than 10 per cent…. (more…)

Novelos Therapeutics Pivotal Phase 3 Lung Cancer Trial Does Not Meet the Primary Survival Endpoint

Wednesday, February 24th, 2010

NEWTON, Mass.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Novelos Therapeutics, Inc. (OTCBB: NVLT – News), a biopharmaceutical company focused on the development of therapeutics to treat cancer and hepatitis, today announced that the primary endpoint of improvement in overall survival was not met in Novelos’ pivotal Phase 3 trial in advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) studying its lead product, NOV-002, in combination with first-line chemotherapy. Detailed trial results are expected to be presented via appropriate scientific venue later this year.

This randomized, controlled, open-label Phase 3 trial, conducted under a Special Protocol Assessment (SPA) and Fast Track designation, had enrolled 903 patients with Stage IIIb/IV NSCLC, which includes all histological subtypes. The trial, conducted across approximately 100 clinical sites in 12 countries, evaluated NOV-002 in combination with first-line paclitaxel and carboplatin chemotherapy versus paclitaxel and carboplatin alone. The primary efficacy endpoint of the trial was improvement in overall survival. Enrollment commenced in November 2006, target enrollment was achieved in March 2008, and the 725 event (patient death) was announced in early January 2010. According to the trial’s Statistical Analysis Plan (SAP), a total of 725 events were required to detect a 25% improvement (12.5 months versus 10 months) in overall median survival (hazard ratio of 0.8) with 85% power and a two-sided significance level of 0.05. No interim analysis was performed.

“We are very disappointed that our pivotal Phase 3 lung cancer trial did not meet the primary survival endpoint,” said Harry Palmin, President and CEO of Novelos. “We were hopeful of a positive outcome based on our statistical model simulations and stated assumptions. In retrospect, it appears our simulations were inaccurate due to trial data deviating from our statistical model, the impact of censoring patterns, and control arm survival exceeding our expectations based on historical precedents. We will conduct a thorough analysis of all the data, and expect to present detailed Phase 3 lung cancer trial results later this year. Meanwhile, we are scheduled to present new NOV-002 preclinical data at the AACR Annual Meeting in April 2010, and we are on track for results from a NOV-002 Phase 2 breast cancer trial in 3Q 2010. We are also on track to initiate a Phase 2 hepatitis C trial shortly, with our second compound NOV-205.”…. (more…)
