Mesothelioma and Children

Sunday, July 26th, 2009
Mesothelioma is not only a disease of adults, but this disease can, in rare cases, also strike children. Because the prognosis is poor, doctors need to carefully diagnose mesothelioma in their youngest patients. Doctors don’t know what causes mesothelioma in children. Although a high number of adults with the disease have a history of asbestos exposure, this isn’t the case in children. “The latent period of asbestos exposure in mesothelioma patients can be many years,” explains Cesar A. Moran, MD, professor of Pathology in the Department of Pathology at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas. “Children have not lived long enough to be in that ballpark.” Dr. Moran and his colleagues recently published a study in the journal, Histopathology, in which they looked at the cases of eight children with mesothelioma. All of the children had cancer in the abdominal cavity lining (peritoneal mesothelioma). Most adults with the disease have pleural mesothelioma, which affects the lining of the lung….. (more…)

Causes of death in patients with mesothelioma

Saturday, July 25th, 2009

Mesothelioma is a rare form of cancer that arises from the pleura or, less often, from the peritoneum. The disease is almost always fatal and the median time between diagnosis and death is less than one year [1,2]. Mesothelioma is strongly associated with occupational exposure to asbestos fibres. Industries with high exposure to asbestos in the past included mining, shipyard working and asbestos cement manufacture. The annual numbers of mesothelioma deaths in Great Britain increased 12-fold in the period from 1968 to 2001[3] and an epidemiological model that incorporated the historical use of asbestos suggested that the annual numbers of deaths will continue to rise to a peak at around 1950–2400 deaths per year in 2011–2015. The aim of this analysis was to examine the certified causes of death of patients diagnosed with mesothelioma, and assess the validity of mortality data as a proxy for data on mesothelioma incidence.

Initially, we extracted the numbers of mesothelioma cancer registrations and mesothelioma deaths nationally for 2004 from the Cancer Information System (CIS), which provides cancer registration and cancer mortality data from the whole of England. Thereafter, we extracted cancer registrations of patients diagnosed with mesothelioma in the South East of England area between 2000 and 2004 from the Thames Cancer Registry database. Patients who had cause of death specified on the death certificate were identified and used for the analysis. The deaths were classified hierarchically as follows: Firstly, we identified death certificates that mentioned mesothelioma as one of the causes of death. Secondly, among the remaining death certificates, we identified those that mentioned lung cancer as a cause of death. Third, among the now remaining death certificates, we identified those that mentioned an unspecified cancer as a cause of death. Last, there remained a group of death certificates that included no mention of mesothelioma, lung cancer or unspecified cancer….. (more…)

Mesothelioma: Symptoms and Misdiagnosis

Saturday, July 25th, 2009

Mesothelioma is a relatively rare cancer, that is usually associated with asbestos. Exposure to asbestos fibers can cause mesothelioma even years later. Currently, mesothelioma is an active area of lawsuits and litigation. The area of law is not usually medical malpractice, because mesothelioma liability is usually related to the asbestos exposure, involving legal areas such as product liability, wrongful death, or other liability. However, medical malpractice for mesothelioma can occur due to failure to diagnose mesothelioma in its early stages. Such delayed diagnosis of mesothelioma worsens its prognosis. Always seek qualified legal advice about malpractice or other law, as the area is very complex….. (more…)

What is Asbestos?

Saturday, July 25th, 2009

Asbestos is a useful material made of six different fibrous minerals, namely: chrysotile, crocidolite, amosite, tremolite, anthophyllite, and actinolite. These asbestos minerals come from mines throughout the world, including mines in such locations as South America, Australia and Canada. Best known for its heat retardant capacity, asbestos is used in such products as roofing shingles, automobile brake pads, floor tiles, and assorted gaskets. Asbestos wraps were also commonly used over the years to insulate heating ducts and water pipes in homes, offices, and other buildings.

While asbestos has some outstanding benefits and is part of a number of useful products, it also has numerous hazardous aspects to it. Individuals exposed to asbestos fibers can suffer lung damage, heart damage, cancer, and other disabilities. Exposure to asbestos has also proven deadly. The negative aspects of asbestos have caused quite a stir since the 1960′s, when many of the problems associated with asbestos were discovered. Lawsuits seeking damages for asbestos-related disabilities and deaths have often been in the news….. (more…)

Mesothelioma Prognosis

Friday, July 24th, 2009

Approximately 2,000 to 3,000 new cases of mesothelioma are diagnosed in the United States each year. Once a patient is diagnosed, a doctor will likely discuss their prognosis, or probable course and outcome of the cancer’s influence on the body. The best way to avoid a poor prognosis is through early detection. Mesothelioma is not generally diagnosed until the latest stages of development because of the amount of time it takes for patients to display symptoms associated with the disease. In addition to this, the symptoms of mesothelioma are very general and often resemble less serious conditions, which can make the cancer difficult to diagnose. As a result, the prognosis for the majority of patients is poor, but many doctors can recommend treatment options such as surgery, chemotherapy and radiation to help combat the disease.

Doctors typically address the cancer in terms of stages, ranging from stage one to stage four. Unfortunately, once mesothelioma cancer has reached stage three or four, treatment options not only become more limited but less effective as well. When a patient is diagnosed with stage four mesothelioma?, their health condition often rules out the possibility of surgery. Treating mesothelioma becomes more difficult the later a diagnosis occurs….. (more…)

Mesotherapy is a non-surgical procedure

Friday, July 24th, 2009

Mesotherapy is a non-surgical procedure used for weight loss and body sculpting to reduce, eliminate and contour fat deposits and cellulite. It involves injecting small amounts of conventional or homeopathic medication and/or vitamins just under the skin surface (mesoderm) to break down the fatty tissue and improve skin circulation, tone, firmness and texture. It can also be used to rejuvenate the surface of the skin. The procedure can usually be carried out in 10 to 25 minutes with no recovery time involved. Prior to the procedure, the practitioner will identify and map the area to the treated. You will then lie on a therapy couch and the area will be swabbed with an antiseptic solution. The practitioner will then use tiny needles to inject the medication into the mesoderm. The ‘multi-pricking’ can be done by hand or by using a specific mechanical delivery system….. (more…)

Therapy for the treatment of the mesothelioma cancer

Dallas, TX: It is the need of the day, mesothelioma cancer patients and patients with other forms of cancers too need drugs that could pull them out of the misery they are in. Anti Angiogenesis drugs have rising the hope of survival and recovery of the cancer patients.

Angiogenesis process is explained as:

Angiogenesis is a process that involves the growth of new blood vessels from the existing ones. Angiogenesis, is therefore a normal process in the growth and development of the blood capillaries and vessels.

The term ’angiogenesis’ is used, summarizing all different types of modifications of the arterial blood vessel growth.

All cells, whether they are the normal cells of the body, or abnormal ones, like the cancerous cells, need nutrition for their growth and development. The nutrition is in the form of rich supply of blood. The cells and the tumors are surrounded by a network of capillaries and blood vessels that feed these cells.

These fast growing cells promote angiogenesis. New blood vessels and capillaries form a complete network round the cells and tumors. These tumors and cells are able to receive a prompt supply of oxygenated blood that helps them to grow and metastasize.

The modern research is bent to investigate a slow down process to regulate, stop, or retard the process of angiogenesis. If this is done successfully, then there will be chances .that since the tumors will not be able to receive any blood supply, they will dry off.

A number of anti drugs, known as the anti angiogenesis drugs, that act as angiogenesis inhibitors, have been developed. A few of them have been tested on the human beings, and the results observed seem to be promising….. (more…)

What is Mesotherapy?

Tuesday, July 21st, 2009

Mesotherapy is a technique, invented in 1952 by Dr. Michel Pistor, where medication is injected into the mesoderm, the layer of fat and connective tissue under the skin. Over the past 50+ years, an excess of 15,000 physicians world-wide have used Mesotherapy on a daily basis for a variety of purposes, including overall weight loss, spot weight reduction, cellulite reduction, hair loss, scar revision and wrinkle elimination. Mesotherapy is also used to correct unevenness, lumps, or divots that develop after liposuction. In 1987, the French Academy of Medicine recognized Mesotherapy as an inherent part of traditional medicine. The International Society of Mesotherapy encompasses 14 countries throughout Europe and South America. Using a very tiny needle (0.4 to 0.6 cm or the size of an eyelash), the medication is injected into the mesoderm painlessly. Sometimes the technique of “multi-pricking” is used, where a number of swift, painless injections are concentrated in a specific area. Although “multi-pricking” can be done by hand, we at Mesotherapy Associates offer a mechanical delivery system that delivers the medicine in a more accurate fashion with even less discomfort to the patient. Patients have universally reported that the treatments cause less pain than a momentary, light pinch.

The medications that are used in Mesotherapy melt the fat beneath the skin and shrink the fat cells in the Scarpa’s fascia layer. The fat dissolves and is excreted by the kidneys and the bowel without any changes in your bowel habits.

Cellulite is caused by connective tissue bands that hold down the skin, trapping the fat and thereby causing the “dimpling” effect. The medications used in Mesotherapy destroy the connective tissue bands and melt the trapped fat, creating a smooth, dimple-free appearance. In Mesotherapy, very small doses of different medications are administered in specific areas, depending on the condition being treated. The medicines and plant extracts that we use at Mesotherapy Associates, P.C. are obtained from local pharmaceutical companies in the United States . All medicines used are FDA-approved for their use. In combination, medicines for Mesotherapy are used for off-line purposes. A recent illustration of this distinction is Botox. Although Botox is FDA approved for controlling muscle spasms, the medical community embraced it for its cosmetic propberties of controlling wrinkles. For many years, plastic surgeons and dermatologists have used Botox for off-line purposes….. (more…)

Mesothelioma: Questions and Answers

Monday, July 20th, 2009

Mesothelioma is a rare form of cancer in which malignant (cancerous) cells are found in the mesothelium, a protective sac that covers most of the body’s internal organs. Most people who develop mesothelioma have worked on jobs where they inhaled asbestos particles.

  1. What is the mesothelium? The mesothelium is a membrane that covers and protects most of the internal organs of the body. It is composed of two layers of cells: One layer immediately surrounds the organ; the other forms a sac around it. The mesothelium produces a lubricating fluid that is released between these layers, allowing moving organs (such as the beating heart and the expanding and contracting lungs) to glide easily against adjacent structures. The mesothelium has different names, depending on its location in the body. The peritoneum is the mesothelial tissue that covers most of the organs in the abdominal cavity. The pleura is the membrane that surrounds the lungs and lines the wall of the chest cavity. The pericardium covers and protects the heart. The mesothelial tissue surrounding the male internal reproductive organs is called the tunica vaginalis testis. The tunica serosa uteri covers the internal reproductive organs in women.

  2. What is mesothelioma? Mesothelioma (cancer of the mesothelium) is a disease in which cells of the mesothelium become abnormal and divide without control or order. They can invade and damage nearby tissues and organs. Cancer cells can also metastasize (spread) from their original site to other parts of the body. Most cases of mesothelioma begin in the pleura or peritoneum….. (more…)

Mesothelioma: Early Symptoms, Pleural Effusion, Diagnosis & Treatment

MESOTHELIOMA SYMPTOMS:

The early symptoms of mesothelioma are generally non-specific, and may lead to a delay in diagnosis. Sometimes resembling viral pneumonia, pleural mesothelioma patients may present with shortness of breath, chest pain and/or persistent cough; some patients show no symptoms at all. A chest x-ray may show a build-up of fluid or pleural effusion (discussed below). The right lung is affected 60% of the time, with involvement of both lungs being seen in approximately 5% of patients at the time of diagnosis. Less common symptoms of pleural mesothelioma include fever, night sweats and weight loss. Symptoms of peritoneal mesothelioma may include pain or swelling in the abdomen due to a build-up of fluid, nausea, weight loss, bowel obstruction, anemia or swelling of the feet….. (more…)
